Most pet costumes fail for one reason: the size. Pet costumes often run small, and every brand measures a little differently. The good news: you only need a soft tape measure and two minutes.
1. Neck
Measure around the neck where a collar sits. Leave room for one finger between tape and fur.
2. Chest
Measure around the widest part of the chest, right behind the front legs. For most costumes this is the most important number.
3. Back length
Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. You only need it for full suits like the dinosaur costume or the Santa costume.
Compare with the size guide
Every product page on Petoween has a size guide in cm and inches. Compare your numbers with it. If your pet is between two sizes, choose the larger one. Hats and capes like the pumpkin hat or the vampire cape are much more forgiving than full suits.
Tips for cats
Cats accept light costumes best: capes, hats and harness costumes such as the nun costume or the headless horseman rider. Measure when your cat is relaxed, for example after a meal.
Tips for dogs
For dogs with a deep chest (bulldogs, pugs) the chest decides, not the weight. Fluffy dogs: press the tape gently into the fur.
